Merville Battery was identified as a threat to SWORD and JUNO Beaches, as it was believed to house four heavy artillery pieces. In the early hours of D-Day it was attacked by a small force of British paratroopers, who found the battery undamaged by Allied bombing and stormed it in a costly frontal attack.
