Description: In advance of D-Day, enemy-held airfields were targeted by Allied bombers, in an attempt to destroy German aircraft, kill German aircrews and render airfield facilities unserviceable. In this way the Allies were able to achieve air superiority over the Normandy beachheads and protect vulnerable ships and landing craft from attack. In 1944, Paris-Orly airfield was home to Luftwaffe units flying the Junkers Ju-88 bomber.
