Dambusters images released

Images from two of the most famous bombing raids of the Second World War, by 617 Squadron, Royal Air Force, are featured in a batch of 5,300 historic aerial images which are now accessible online.

To coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid, images of the three dams, attacked on 17 May 1943, have been released, along with images of the Saumur Tunnel in France, after its destruction in June 1944, when 617 Squadron dropped the first Tallboy 12,000lb earthquake bombs.

Other images released in this batch cover areas ranging from Western Europe to North Africa, copied as part of the NCAP digitisation project, which aims to make 150,000 aerial images available online by the end of June 2013.
